Matchday 39 kicked off with picking Liam up from school, leading to a 30-minute drive to Wolverhampton Train Station. From there, we boarded a direct CrossCountry Train to Manchester Piccadilly. Despite my intention to wear my Liverpool shirt for good luck, hidden beneath layers due to a simultaneous Liverpool match, our journey went smoothly.
Upon reaching Manchester, our plan for a 30-minute walk to the stadium was thwarted by heavy rain. A misguided attempt to find a bus led us to the wrong station, resulting in a 15-minute downpour. Eventually, a crowded tram took us to the Etihad Campus, where we admired the stadium’s exterior before grabbing a matchday scarf and program.
Inside the stadium, a unique smoke and light show, including a tribute to Vincent Kompany, entertained us. Despite the challenge of buying tickets, numerous empty seats earned the stadium the nickname “Emptihad.” The match unfolded with City leading 2-0 at halftime, thanks to two goals by Alvarez. A swift third goal after halftime was missed due to a restroom visit.
Exiting on the 80th minute, we opted for a tram ride instead of a walk, ensuring we caught an earlier train back to Wolverhampton. Despite missing Burnley’s late goal, the quieter journey enhanced our overall experience. Special thanks to CrossCountry Trains for their punctuality and pleasant service.
Liam thoroughly enjoyed witnessing Erling Haaland’s brief appearance, making this another memorable matchday. Gratitude to Pat for securing the tickets, a pivotal contribution to the completion of this challenging match.

My son Liam, Grandad Steve and I completed the famous 92 Football League Grounds challenge for the second time with a trip to The Hive, Barnet FC’s state‑of‑the‑art home since 2013 after 106 years at Underhill for Matchday 97. Grandad Steve kindly agreed to drive, giving my car a much‑needed

Oldham Athletic Vs Bromley
Matchday 96 saw us heading north to Boundary Park, home of Oldham Athletic. This was the first of two newly promoted clubs we’d be visiting this season following their return to the Football League from the National League. For me, this felt like more than just another ground to tick
