Matchday 37 unfolded with the rush to pick up Liam from school, followed by a brisk journey up the M6. Despite anticipating a three-hour travel time, we were pleasantly surprised by manageable traffic, arriving in Leeds with a solid hour before the game. Approaching Elland Road, a “Football Parking” sign near “Ultimate Fitness 4 U” caught my attention, promising easy access post-game. With no specified price on the sign, I parked as instructed by the attendant, who confirmed the fee as £10, ensuring surveillance during the match. This alleviated concerns about the unfamiliar area. The parking spot was a brief 10-minute walk from Elland Road, passing another parking area also priced at £10.
The vicinity buzzed with fans, and we seized the opportunity to grab some chips for Liam. Two takeaways, one with a lengthy queue and the other, Chico’s, without, led us to opt for the latter. A portion of chips came in just under £3, freshly cooked and satisfying.
Taking a stroll around the ground, we discovered “Bremner Square,” adorned with over 6000 personalized stones featuring fan messages and tributes to past players. A prominent statue of Billy Bremner, Leeds’ most successful captain, stood proudly, surrounded by stones commemorating the club’s history.
Entering the stadium, we underwent a quick bag check before visiting the toilets and finding our seats. Positioned in the East Stand, fourth row from the front and just off the centre line, our view was spectacular. Impressed by the stadium, we soaked in the atmosphere, which ranked among the best we had experienced, second perhaps only to Stockport County. The home fans maintained a vibrant atmosphere with continuous singing and chanting throughout the game.
While the game itself lacked excitement, with Norwich delivering a lacklustre performance and Leeds struggling to find the target in the second half, the overall experience was positive.
Departing on the 88th minute for a quick visit to the toilet before heading to the car, we encountered an unexpected hurdle. Three cars had blocked half of the car park with no staff in sight, causing frustration among fans waiting to leave. Despite this delay, our drive home, navigating four sets of roadworks and lane closures, took approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, concluding at 00:40.
