Matchday 41 ended up being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. We drove through torrential rain, constantly checking for updates during the 3-hour drive, but received no news. Upon our arrival near the stadium, we opted to park in a nearby housing estate. The walk took about 10 minutes in horrendous weather, with pavements filled with water, leaving our coats and shoes soaked.
As we approached the entrance to one of the stands, I inquired about the location of the club shop to purchase our matchday scarf. To my surprise, the staff member was not aware, so I sought directions from another member of staff who directed me around the corner.
We purchased both a scarf and a program at the club shop and retraced our steps to find our way back. Despite the lack of clarity on our tickets regarding the designated stand, we eventually found our way with the assistance of another staff member.
To our dismay, we discovered that the seats I had booked were inadequate, lacking proper backs and exposing us to the elements. Despite politely requesting alternative seating due to our extensive journey, the steward was unable to assist us, suggesting we use tissue from the food trucks to dry our seats. Disheartened by the situation, we headed to the toilets and took a few photos along the way.
Approaching another steward for directions to the food trucks, we were once again met with uncertainty. It took several attempts before we finally received clear directions from a supervisor. Armed with tissue from the food trucks, we dried our seats and settled in the rain, awaiting the start of the game amidst constant disruptions from passersby.
Despite the volume of water on the pitch, the game commenced on time. However, after just 8 minutes, the match was halted due to the unplayable conditions. Efforts to sweep the water from the grass proved futile, leading to the disappointing announcement of the game’s cancellation.
Our 6-hour round trip and over half a tank of fuel were wasted on what turned out to be our worst experience of the 92 so far. Despite the setback, we have reached out to Cambridge United about our experience and have mutually agreed to meet with the Supporters Liaison Officer on our next visit.
