The evening started with the excitement of watching Sunderland in action, and it was a journey filled with moments to remember. Sunderland secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory, thanks to first-half goals from Daniel Ballard and a brace by Jack Clarke.
Our adventure began with me picking up Liam directly from school, and we hit the road immediately, knowing that we’d be travelling during peak hours through Birmingham, Derbyshire, and Sheffield.
Our journey to Sheffield took a surprising turn as we opted for a quicker detour through the picturesque Derbyshire dales. The stunning scenery was a sight to behold, although the roads were occasionally quite narrow. As we approached the stadium, about 2 miles away, we came across a road traffic accident involving a cyclist and a car. No emergency vehicles were on the scene, so we can only hope help arrived swiftly. Once back home, I attempted to find more information about the incident online, but there was none to be found.
Prepared with a bit of research before the game, I headed towards a parking spot known as the “Hillsborough Park Hawksley Avenue Car Park.” It offered a similar walk to that of Matchday 1, and since we arrived at 1810 (charged until 1830), parking only cost me 90p. The maximum charge for over 4 hours of parking is just £3.60.
Our first stop was one of the must-visit places for any Liverpool fan: the Hillsborough Memorial. Standing there, I took a deep breath, looked at Liam, hugged him, and felt the emotional weight of the fact that 97 brothers and sisters went to watch a football game in 1989 and never returned to their families. After a moment of reflection, we made our way to the stadium, which was conveniently located next to the memorial, connected by a bridge across the River Don.
As we circled the stadium to the right, we stumbled upon the players’ entrance just as the Sunderland Team was disembarking from their coach. Liam was gutted that he narrowly missed Jobe Bellingham, but he did manage to snap photos with Patrick Roberts, Dan Neil, Hemir Semedo, and goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
With Liam’s appetite whetted by the journey, despite eating most of the way in the car, we decided to indulge in some chips at Hoong Too before finally making our way into the ground and to our seats.
Ticket confusion ensued as I grappled with which entrance to use and ended up assisting a steward who was just as bewildered until we both figured out the way.
Upon taking our seats in the first row, Liam immediately realized that the electronic advertising boards were blocking his view of the pitch. After discussions with another steward and a supervisor, it was agreed that I could relocate to another seat since the game wasn’t sold out. I offered feedback to the supervisor that the front row should not be sold to children under 11 when making the booking, especially without any prior warnings about the restricted view.
The match itself was nothing short of surreal. Having paid little attention to Sheffield Wednesday’s league position (at the bottom) and their performance this season, I was taken aback by their poor showing. However, the most surprising aspect was witnessing the fans cheering on the opposition and even booing their players. As passionate football fans, we found it hard to believe what we saw and heard. We stayed warm with £3.00 drinks each at halftime.
Leaving the stadium was a breeze, with no traffic issues to speak of. We arrived home just after midnight, capping off a truly unique football match experience.
As our ’92FCChallenge’ continues, we’re reminded that each matchday brings its own set of surprises and stories. This journey through the world of football is nothing short of extraordinary, and we can’t wait to see what the next match holds.
