Matchday 48 unfolded as a brief yet significant journey to Crewe, where our gratitude for Sutton’s unwavering support, particularly from Ryan and Phil, continued to grow during this challenging season. Opting for a train from Wolverhampton, rather than driving, was a strategic decision aimed at reducing stress, allowing Liam ample time to return home from school, change, and enjoy a quick meal before embarking on the trip.
Despite prebooking the multi-story carpark, the experience proved less than ideal. The parking facility, while close to the station, presented challenges with tight spaces, nearly resulting in damage to my car. Notably, the signage left much to be desired. For those driving larger vehicles, it’s advisable to explore alternative parking options.
The journey into Wolverhampton consumed approximately 40 minutes, influenced by the time of day. However, our Avanti West Coast train provided a swift 35-minute journey to Crewe upon its arrival. The station’s convenient location, just a 5-minute walk from the stadium, enhanced the overall efficiency of our trip.
Upon reaching the stadium, a deliberate choice was made for Liam to wait outside the club shop while I procured a Crewe scarf, concealing it in our bag. This strategic move allowed us to capture memorable moments, including a visit to the away ticket office where Ryan and Phil had thoughtfully arranged for Liam and his niece Leah’s Sutton tops to be signed by the team. This warm gesture echoed the hospitality we experienced during our visit to the VBS Community Stadium in January.
Our pre-match experience continued in the supporters’ bar, where a pleasant ambiance prevailed as both sets of fans mingled over a refreshing pint of cider. Following this, we approached the turnstiles, where engaging stewards expressed genuine interest in Liam’s YouTube channel, having spotted his vlogging camera.
Crewe’s generosity extended beyond the warm welcome, as they distributed free hot drink vouchers to fans. This simple yet thoughtful gesture resonated, especially for those who had undertaken the long journey. Armed with our vouchers, we acquired hot beverages before securing seats in the away section of the stand, strategically choosing optimal viewing positions.
A highlight of the day occurred when Ryan arranged for Stephen Duke-McKenna to have a photo with Liam during half-time—a gesture that added a personal touch to our matchday experience.
Despite the relatively small number of Sutton fans (82 in total), their unwavering support reverberated throughout the stadium, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The game itself, while entertaining, culminated in a narrow 1-0 victory for Crewe, adding to the challenges Sutton faces in securing their EFL status.
The journey home, while uneventful, concluded around 23:00, providing a timely return for Liam to school the following day. Looking ahead, our next match promises another significant journey, as we prepare to watch Middlesbrough vs Blackburn on Saturday, March 16. We remain committed to monitoring and supporting Sutton, anticipating more memorable experiences in the future.
